Meets tonight at Toppenish Eagles
STAND-UP Committee incorporates, names first director, board members

TOPPENISH (Tuesday, 6-27-00)--- The STAND-UP Committee has elected a nine-member Board of Directors and named Elaine Willman as executive director, members said today.

Included on the first director board are:

  • Kelly Story, Secretary, Sunnyside
  • Judy Johnson, Treasurer, Wapato
  • Tony Romero, Toppenish
  • Peggy Gerred, Wapato
  • Blaine Thorington, Toppenish
  • Glen Huylar, Toppenish
  • Boyd Gray, Toppenish

    Topics at this week's meeting--slated for 7 p.m. today at the Toppenish Eagles Club--are two Fourth of July events.

    Projects include the Toppenish Parade and a booth on the Rodeo Grounds for the four-day rodeo.

    Also at tonight's meeting, KNDO Channel 4 is expected to do a special feature about the STAND-UP Committee.

    "We'd LOVE to see a good turnout at tonight's meeting," said Executive Director Willman. "We're telling our members to 'Please come if you possibly can'."

    Factual updates will include developments across the country, in Toppenish and across Washington, regarding tribal government activities which would replace democracy with "sovereign authority" that provides no voice for non-Indians.

    "The website includes a recent email letter I received from Governor (Gary) Locke's office, and many letters-to-editors recently published in area newspapers," said Director Willman.

    "We have great links to grassroots groups like ours, across the country. We're getting lots of 'hits' on our site and also getting very high compliments on the site content and layout," she said.

    "Our huge thanks go out to Larry and Carol Ashby for putting us on the Internet 'global' map! The site has been extremely helpful for linking our local group with some 285 OTHER groups like us, formed up across the country," she said.

    Regarding Fourth of July festivities, she said, "We need folks (and little kids!) to ride on our float on Tuesday, July 4. We also need a few folks willing to work a four-hour shift in our booth at the Rodeo."
