Federal
madness under Clinton-Gore
STAND-UP
Committee gaining momentum in Yakima
Valley
TOPPENISH (Friday
5-26-00)---Federal tyranny traceable to the
Clinton-Gore regime has more heads than a Hydra, and
one of them of late has been chewing away at
non-Indian property owners on the Yakama Indian
Reservation.
A local group--the
STAND-UP Committee--has drawn its sword against this
beast--warriors are holding meetings, raising dollars,
and eyeballing politicians to see where they stand on
tribal "sovereignty" issues.
The Yakima Valley
News is providing a website
for the fledgling group, which aims to make real
changes in the facts of political life in Washington
state this year.
According to group
organizers,
"Politicians across
the United States often are exchanging local
non-Indians' rights for Indian votes and (casino
derived) campaign dollars by appeasing tribal
governments." Groups nationwide, with whom STAND-UP
coordinates, will thump these hacks wherever they
are.
One Valley organizer,
Elaine
Willman, said
STAND-UP's concerns include:
- The proposed alcohol
ban on the Yakama Reservation. This ban has almost
zero to do with alcohol, but sets precedent for
other regulatory activities such as licensing,
fees, etc., on non-Indian businesses and
properties. If successful (it is expected to
destroy) non-Indian business and tourism in Central
Washington.
- The Yakama Tribe's
pursuit of "state" status with EPA for more
restrictive water quality standards. If successful,
it is expected to destroy non-Indian farmers and
the the Yakima Valley's agricultural-based
economy.
- The Tribe's intent to
acquire all electrical power on the reservation,
including two Columbia River dams that provide it.
If that grab is successful, it is expected to
destroy communities on and off the reservation,
which are likely unable to afford high and unfair
utility rates and negligent service
delivery.
Said Willman, "The Yakama
Indian Nation isn't as up-front as other U.S. tribes
that are blatantly announcing and pursuing their land
grabs. But the Yakama Tribe's recent activities will
bring about the same end result."
"The Yakama Nation says
these issues are not an effort to run-off the 9,988
taxpaying property owners on the reservation--so that
dramatically devalued land can be bought back by the
tribe," she said. "Sure, and Clinton is as pure as the
Pope."
Like the burgeoning
"anti-sovereignty (for tribes)" movement nationwide,
STAND-UP's wrath is directed toward corrupt tribal
governments and corrupt, non-Indian politicians. The
spirit of the groups was summed up by Scott Seaborne
of New York.
"There are thousands of us
across the nation who have been blindsided by the
madness of federal Indian policy and Indian law,"
writes Mr. Seaborne.
"Although the individual
issues vary from location to location, the final
solution to all our problems must be sought in
Washington D.C.; addressing either Congress or the
U.S. Supreme Court.
"In that regard, CERA and
CERF take the position that the culprit is in federal
policy and not with Indian people. We vehemently
oppose any group or actions that work against
individual Native people. We oppose government
policies that negatively effect individuals living on
or near Indian reservations," Seaborne
said.
"...One of our key goals
is to support the efforts of tribal members to resist
the attempts of tribal governments to infringe on
their individual civil rights. There are many Natives
who feel their tribal councils are dictatorial,
arbitrary and corrupt.
"We're working (in New
York) with a group of tribal members to find ways to
make tribal governments more accountable to their own
people. Yes, Indians are victims too," Seaborne
said.
The STAND-UP Committee
indicated the group realizes the roots of their
problems lie with the Democrat Clinton-Gore regime,
which some believe has issued "madness"
in myriad federal policies since 1992.
"We have circulated
notices encouraging folks to attend Senator Slade
Gorton's (R-WA) kickoff events coming up in our area,"
she said. We plan to campaign actively for Senator
Gorton, and actively against all local elected
officials who are beholden to tribal lobbyists and
political action committee (PAC)
contributions."
