Coincidences abound
Sunnyside postmaster shares name with Yakima IRS agent
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 1-26-00)--Boy, here's a bunch of coincidences for YVN's readers.

Karen Durkee, Sunnyside Postmaster, is "out on special assignment" in the western states" according to Sunnyside PO employees. So reporters can't immediately ask her if she's the same Karen Durkee who's an IRS agent operating out of 107 S. 7th Ave., Yakima.

The newspaper called IRS-Karen at (509) 454-5706 and asked her if she was sometime-Sunnyside Postmaster Karen Durkee.

Said IRS-Karen, "I'm not the Sunnyside Postmaster. I've been working for the IRS in Yakima the past 10 years. How'd you get this phone number?"

Intrepid reporters went to Sunnyside Post Office and chatted briefly with Acting Postmaster Larry Decker. He seemed a bit surprised at the name coincidence, and the other coincidence that Sunnyside Postmaster Karen was "out on special assignment for a few months".

Decker said Postmaster-Karen's out-of-town assignment, is "in Phoenix, and in several other western states." She'll apparently be travelin' some.

Postmaster-Karen reportedly has been with the U.S. Post Office since 1974. She replaced Acting Postmaster Leslie Shiels last year, who earlier replaced long time Postmaster Billy Hargrove.

YVN reporters asked Decker for the Postmaster's job description with emphasis on info regarding their rights of access to private mail. Decker said he would obtain it and get it to the paper.

IRS public information officials in Seattle said earlier the tax collection agency has on board "special agents working either under psuedonyms, or whose names aren't available under the Freedom of Information Act."
