- Half
of student body flees anyway
- SHS shooting
just a rumor say officials
- SUNNYSIDE (Friday
10-15-99)--It was only a rumor that a shooting took
place at Sunnyside High School this morning, but
50% of students were released to go home, anyway,
if they were fearful.
School officials said
the rumor began circulating at about 8:30 a.m. It
was not immediately clear who got the rumor going
nor whether it was gang related. But police
reportedly said the rumor started last night and
predicted a shooting "next week."
-
- Nowadays, in view of a
national rash of school shootings, such stuff is
almost tantamount to shouting "fire!" in a crowded
theater.
-
- According to a joint
news release from Supt. Rick Cole, SHS Principal
Bob Thomas and Sunnyside Police Capt. Ed Radder,
"At approximately 8:30 a.m. a rumor began to
circulate throughout Sunnyside High School that a
shooting may be taking place at our
school."
"Local law enforcement
officers and school district officials have been on
site throughout this morning and there has been NO
EVIDENCE that the rumor is true.
-
- "We are checking every
rumor to our fullest ability.
-
- "Sunnyside High School
is safe and we are working hard to ensure that all
students are protected and remain in a safe
environment. In the future, rumors may lead to an
immediate lockdown of our facilities," officials
said.
