Total project cost $870,000
Sunnyside businesses give to
downtown centennial projects
SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday, 7-20-99)---Two of Sunnyside's larger businesses have each given $5,000 to our town's Centennial Square and Historical Pathway Projects, according to officials.

Sprint--"the telephone company" made its contribution earlier this month, and Ace Hardware did so today.

"These are outstanding contributions," said Wendy Larson of the Uptown Sunnyside Association. "We are very grateful to these fine businesses."

Co-chairs of the fundraising project are Dale Johnson and Stan Snow.

The downtown project, which will greatly beautify the area, will provide a midtown community square, restrooms, a main stage and sound system, beautiful landscaping, public information kiosks, public art and statues commemorating Sunnyside's 100th birthday in 2002.

The Historical Pathway features a meandering pathway between the Square, the Sunnyside Museum and Ben Snipe's cabin.

The pathway will contain contributor acknowledgments, statues, plaques depicting Sunnyside's history, ornamental lighting, and fixtures of that early era.

Total cost of the project is $870,000. Of this, $130,000 must be raised to acquire two properties at Sixth Street And Edison Avenue. The goal is to raise the money in 130 days--in order to get the project finished by Sunnyside's Centennial Celebration.

Contributions to the Square will be acknowledged by various granite monuments, pavers and bricks varying in prominence by the amount of the contribution. Contribution forms are now available by calling Miss Larson at 839-8275.

Contribution Schedule:

Major contributors will be acknowledge on a four-sided, black granite monument ( 3 X 5 feet). The History of Sunnyside will be on one side and the major contributors on the other. The monument will be placed in the main Square. Major contributor categories include:

  • Grand Centennial Contributor $5,000
  • Community Legacy Contributor $2,000
  • Home Town Heritage Contributor $1,000
Other contributors will be acknowledged by granite pavers or bricks. These will be placed along the pathways of the Square and the Historical Pathway. Contributor categories include:
  • Pioneer Pride Contributor (12X12 paver) $500
  • Spirit of Sunnyside (12X6 paver) $250
  • Centennial Citizen Contributor (brick) $100
Those who would like to help with this project, become a part of this landmark project, or have historical information to help with founding families, times, or past Sunnyside events are urged to contact Mr. Johnson, Mr. Snow, or Wendy Larson at 839-8275.
