busted after breaking into car
- SUNNYSIDE (Sunday,
5-18-99)--Folks called the law after they saw a
guy trying to break into a parked car at 2550
Yakima Valley Highway at around 6:30 p.m.
today.

- As cops came on the
scene, they saw the suspect inside the vehicle.
The suspect attempted escape when he saw police,
but he apparently wasn't fast enough. Officers
caught him a short distance away.
Police arrested
Francisco
Flores, 108
3rd Ave., Mabton, in connection with the
incident. They hauled him to the Sunnyside Jail.
He was booked on charges of theft and resisting
arrest, according to reports.

Reckless
driver bumps into trouble
- SUNNYSIDE (Sunday,
5-16-99)--Someone called the cops when they saw
a driver "doing donuts" in the carwash parking
lot at 16th St. and Lincoln Ave. at 11 p.m.
today.

- When Officer Jim
Ortiz responded to the call, the driver had
already left the parking lot...But he came back
a few minutes later and did it again. As Ortiz
arrived he indicated the driver shot out of the
parking lot "at a high rate of
speed."

- That's when
Manuel
Carlos
Lopez, 21,
of 2400
E. Edison
Ave.,
reportedly skidded his car into the side of
Officer Ortiz' patrol car. Lopez then reportedly
fled the scene. Officers pursued Lopez for about
10 blocks--but "speeds never exceeded 50 mph,"
they said.

sustained about $500 in damages; the patrol car
received minor damage, police
said.

Lopez pending charges of DUI, reckless driving,
hit-and-run attended, felony eluding, and
driving without liability insurance.

car snaps gas meter
- SUNNYSIDE (Sunday,
5-16-99)--A runaway car sheared off a gas meter
and slammed into a house at 1225 S. 15th St. at
9:20 p.m. today, causing the emergency
evacuation of 12-14 nearby homes and 75-100
residents for about 45 minutes.

- The Cascade Natural
Gas company took that time to respond and repair
the damaged line.

- First reports were
that a child had been left unattended in the car
with the engine running, and had slipped the
vehicle into gear.

- Marisela Cisneros,
26, however, told police she left her car in
neutral and it rolled ahead, breaking off the
gas meter.

busted for owning coke at local bar
- SUNNYSIDE
(Thursday, 5-13-99)--A Prosser man was arrested
at around 11 p.m. today for possessing
seven-plus grams of cocaine with a street value
of about $230, according to Det. Sgt. Jim
Rivard.

- Acting on a tip,
police arrested
Guadalupe
Sandoval,
29, of 1895 Wine Country Rd., Prosser, at Gene's
Sports Bar, 535 S. 6th St., after reports that
"subjects were dealing at a local tavern in
Sunnyside."

- She made
a good haul, but was busted
- SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday,
5-7-99)--A Sunnyside woman was arrested at the
J.C. Penney store in the Mid-Valley mall just
before 7 p.m. today and charged with third
degree theft, according to
reports.

- Elisa R.
Cavazos, 40,
of 721 S. 8th St. is believed to have stolen a
purse, plus $500 worth of clothing from Penney's
and $100 worth of digital video disks from
K-Mart. The residence at 721 S. 8th is owned by
Maria Espinoza, according to county
records.

- Sgt. Ed Radder said
police were alerted by Penney's staff about a
shoplifter. When police arrived, the security
officer detained Ms. Cavazos near her vehicle.
The security officer told police a purse had
been stolen from a Penney
customer.

- A short time later,
the security officer reportedly spotted Cavazos'
vehicle parked illegally in a fire lane. When
the security officer approached Cavazos' car she
said she spotted the stolen purse in the back
seat.
-
- The purse
reportedly was lying on top of a pile of full
Penney merchandise sacks. Officer Corey Rosen
asked Cavazos a couple of questions and, after
talking with store clerks, determined the
merchandise also was stolen. That's when he
arrested Cavazos for possession of stolen
property and theft.

- Rosen said two
other women also were implicated in this theft.
Warrants will be obtained for their arrests as
well.

- Police said Mrs.
Cavazos also was arrested April 21 at the
Sunnyside Walmart store under similar
circumstances.

arrest 2 at drug house
- SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday,
5-6-99)--Local police and LEAD task force
officers arrested two persons on drug charges
here at 5:45 p.m. today, according to
reports.

- Taken in for
possession of controlled substances and
maintaining a drug house were
Salvador G.
Gurrola, 32,
and Jose E.
Barrios, 50,
both of 2730 Independence Rd., Sunnyside, where
arrests were made.
-
- Owner of the small,
white residence at 2730 Independence Rd. is
Lawrence Dolan, of 609 S. 9th St., Sunnyside,
according to county officials. The house adjoins
a large acrage of grapes. Police made no
connection in reports between Dolan and those
arrested.

- Det. Kent Coffman
said police found six pounds of marijuana, two
pounds of cocaine, and two pounds of meth
amphetamines inside the home. They also found a
loaded .380 caliber semiautomatic
handgun.
-
- Coffman said it
appeared the residence at 2730 was being used to
package and distribute large amounts of
controlled substances.

- He said Gurrola and
Barrios live at 2730 and were home when cops
served the search warrant. More arrests are
expected in the case, police
said.
