Peppermint flavored rough riders?
WA to spend $230,000 for condoms
OLYMPIA (Monday 5-25-99)---Kathleen M. Haskett, state procurement officer, will release bid invitations next week for a whole bunch of condoms.

One calculation sets the buy at 800,000 of the stretchy little things, which will be "ribbed" no less.

Bids will be opened at 10 a.m. June 1 at the Office of State Procurement, General Administration Building, Rm. 201, at the corner of 11th Street and Columbia Avenue in Olympia.

The state will contract with the winning rubber maker to purchase an estimated $230,000 worth between July 1, and June 30, 2000. Contracts may be extended for six years, to 2005.

Bidders will be required to provide, over the length of the yearlong contract, the equivalent of:
  • 3 cases of non-lubricated model 5744
  • 18 cases of non-lubricated model 5700
  • 20 cases of mint-flavored, non-lubricated "Kiss of Mint"
  • 10 cases of Rough Riders.
  • 187 cases of extra-strength lubricated model 6100
  • 162 cases of extra-strength lubricated model 5900
  • 40 cases of spermicidally lubricated model 5544
  • 184 cases of spermicidally lubricated model 5500
  • 114 cases of assorted colors, lubricated, model 5300
  • 63 cases of assorted colors lubricated, model 6000
Haskett said the numbers of cases (1000 rubbers per case) needed are based on past amounts of rubbers used by the state in earlier contracts.

Companies submitting bids need to show their products are readily available on the shelves of Washington businesses.

WA rubber buyers include the Dept. of Social and Health Services, Jails, and Veterans Affairs. She said condoms are given to recipients to "encourage safer sex."

If you make rubbers, you can call Hasket at (360) 902-7438 to chat. Or q email her if you're in a hurry. If you don't make rubbers, you can call her anyway.
