spend $230,000 for condoms
- OLYMPIA (Monday
5-25-99)---Kathleen M. Haskett, state procurement
officer, will release bid invitations next week for a
whole bunch of condoms.

- One calculation
sets the buy at 800,000 of the stretchy little things,
which will be "ribbed" no
less.

- Bids will be
opened at 10 a.m. June 1 at the Office of State
Procurement, General Administration Building, Rm. 201,
at the corner of 11th Street and Columbia Avenue in
Olympia.

- The state will
contract with the winning rubber maker to purchase an
estimated $230,000 worth between July 1, and June 30,
2000. Contracts may be extended for six years, to
2005.

- Bidders will be
required to provide, over the length of the yearlong
contract, the equivalent of:
- 3 cases of
non-lubricated model 5744
- 18 cases of
non-lubricated model 5700
- 20 cases of
mint-flavored, non-lubricated
"Kiss
of Mint"
- 10 cases of
Rough
Riders.

- Haskett said the
numbers of cases (1000 rubbers per case) needed are
based on past amounts of rubbers used by the state in
earlier contracts.

submitting bids need to show their products are
readily available on the shelves of Washington
businesses.

- WA rubber buyers
include the Dept. of Social and Health Services,
Jails, and Veterans Affairs. She said condoms are
given to recipients to "encourage safer sex."
