Shoes 'n' shots
Man jailed for armed assault
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 3-31-99)---Police arrested a Sunnyside man at 5:30 p.m. today for shooting at another who was just trying to retrieve his tennis shoe.

It all started earlier when thugs were chasing Daniel Hernandez, who lost the shoe as he was running away. Hernandez told cops he saw the guys who chased him near 706 S.12th Street. County records say 706, a bright blue house, is owned by Francisco and Graciela Cerda.

So Hernandez gathered some buddies and went back to 706 S. 12th St., where the thugs apparently had gathered. He was "hoping to get his tennis shoe back," reports said.

It was at this time that Alvin Lee Guajardo, 18, reportedly stepped onto the porch of 706 S. 12th St. and fired two rounds from a small caliber semi-automatic pistol at Daniel Hernandez.

"No one was injured," said Det. Sgt. Jim Rivard.

County records don't indicate who owns Guajardo's current digs at 1605 Penn Ave., a white house just off the Mabton-Sunnyside Hwy.

Police investigation reportedly led to the recovery of a small caliber semi-automatic pistol and sawed-off shotgun from Guajardo's car, which was parked at the 12th Street residence.

Officers arrested Guajardo on charges of first degree assault and booked him into Sunnyside Jail. Guajardo, reportedly a local gangster with a rap sheet, will be arraigned later in Yakima County Superior Court.

Reports don 't indicate whether Hernandez got his shoe back.

West Sunnyside auto chase
3 teens nabbed with stolen truck
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 3-24-99)---Police nabbed three teenagers in a stolen truck early today after a chase north on Swan (Maple) Road from Yakima Valley Highway.

Officers responded to a call at 1:40 a.m. today about a suspicious vehicle, an old blue pickup with canopy, at Swan Road and Sunset Place. The pickup matched the description of a vehicle suspected in an earlier vehicle prowl.

While cops were enroute, they learned the suspects had broken the window of the victim's car and fled on Swan Road. Officers located the pickup at Swan Road and Yakima Valley Highway, where they attempted to stop it.

The driver didn't stop, fleeing north on Swan Road, where it changes into Maple Road. The 5.5-mile pursuit reportedly ended near Swan and Shaffee Rds., where suspects lost control of the pickup and left the roadway.

Officers arrested three juvenile occupants, and determined none had been injured. The pickup truck reportedly was stolen from the Zillah area.

Arrested after the chase were:
  • Joseph Francisco Sanchez, 15, of Toppenish, on charges of first degree stolen property possession, felony eluding, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of vehicle prowling.
  • Dustin James Hout, 16, Zillah, first degree stolen property possession, two counts of vehicle prowling, and possession of a dangerous weapon.
  • Roy Ochoa, 14, of 731 Buena Loop Rd., Zillah, first degree stolen property possession, plus possession of burglary tools and marijuana.
Police said the trio was detained and transferred to Yakima County Juvenile Detention.

It was not immediately known whether the three are poor "misunderstood youth" who will "face court through no fault of their own." (Juvenile Justice Chief). This information will lie with Juvenile Court Administration at (509) 574-2050.

Man arrested for S'side auto theft
SUNNYSIDE (Thursday, 3-18-99)---Guadalupe Avila, 44, who lives in the 1100 block of South 13th St., let her car warm up in the driveway around 8 a.m. today while she went back into the house.

When she looked out, she saw a guy hop in and drive her machine away. She called police immediately, and within two minutes, cops nailed the car thief up on North Avenue.

Police stopped the vehicle and arrested Irineo R. Aguirre, 30, of 429 S. 6th Ave., Toppenish, and charged him with first degree auto theft. He was sent to Yakima County Jail for charge filing and later arraignment.

"Citizens are warned of the danger of leaving their vehicle unattended with the keys in the ignition," said Officer Jeff Cunningham.

Aguirre also was arrested at 3:15 p.m. last Sunday by the Washington State Patrol and booked at Sunnyside Jail for an apparently unrelated vehicle theft. WSP Officer G. Hughes reportedly collared Aguirre with a stolen car near Exit 63 on I82, in south Sunnyside.

"Courts are warned of the danger of letting thieves and the violent back on the streets simply to make jail room for those accused of victimless crimes," said YVN publisher Larry Ashby.

Chief Kamiakin arrest
Two kids nailed on pot charges
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 3-17-99)---Chief Kamiakin Elementary School staff called the cops last Friday to say they were holding 13-year old Tino Diaz, 1101 S. 11th St., for intending to deliver marijuana on campus.

After a chat with Diaz, police later arrested Felix Hernandez, 18, also of 1101 S. 11th St., police said today. Police said they searched Hernandez' 11th street digs and found some more pot, under 40 grams.

Det. Kent Coffman said Hernandez was booked into Sunnyside Jail on a pot possession charge. Police noted he was later sentenced to a year in the pokey, with no time dismissed.

Thirteen-year-old Diaz was arrested at Chief Kamiakin and will be charged for pot possession with intent to deliver, police said.

Another Sunnysider nabbed for pot
SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday, 3-2-99)---Another Sunnysider has been arrested today for his intent to sell marijuana in the Valley marketplace.

The collar follows a rash of other recent drug arrests here as local cops scramble to stem the Valley's illegal agricultural production and sales.

Taken in at 10 p.m. was Samuel Mark Bradshaw, 36, of 4050 Outlook Rd., after police investigated a complaint of "narcotics" in the area of his trailer home. Narcotics is accurate terminology for marijuana, according to Webster's, to the degree that it decreases pain.

Officers served a search warrant and found about two pounds of marijuana at Bradshaw's residence. The plants had been prepared and divided into about 25 separate baggies as Bradshaw apparently was set to make his rounds.

Economists at the University of Washington, who asked not to be named for reasons they say are obvious, say pot's high market value is attributed to high production and distribution risks created by present laws, plus high demand from local buyers. If marijuana were decriminalized, its market value, they say, would drop to nothing.

Bradshaw was taken into custody and booked on possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and on an outstanding traffic warrant. He will be arraigned in Yakima County Superior Court.
