- Crash kills Yakima woman
- YAKIMA (Wednesday, 1-28-99)--A 57-year old Yakima woman was killed just after noon today when her car was involved in a collision with a sports utility vehicle at South First and Beech Streets.
- Killed in the accident was Raquel Zarate. Her five-year old passenger, Alberta Gamboa, received unknown injuries as well and was hospitalized, according to police.
- Matthew Simmons, 21, driver of the other vehicle, wasn't injured in the accident, police said.
- Police said Zarate's Ford Probe had stopped on Beech street, eastbound, for the stop sign at First Street. She reportedly pulled onto First in the path of Simmons' Ford Explorer.
- Police said Simmons was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.
- Zarate and Gamboa were taken to Providence Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where Zarate died a short time late, police said.
Baby sitter arrested for murder
- YAKIMA (Saturday, 1-16-99)--A 12-year old boy has been arrested for first degree murder in the death of an 18-month old boy, according to Yakima Police.
- Police and paramedics were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 900 block of South 42nd Avenue at 5:30 p.m. today, in reference to a child having difficulty breathing.
- They found the baby in critical condition, and transported him to Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.
- The baby sitter was transported to the police station for questioning. He was later charged with first degree murder and booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility.
- Detectives are continuing to investigate the case, police said.
