Post Office
has it both ways
SUNNYSIDE (1-11-99)---The
U.S. Post Office is raising the price of single,
first-class stamps from 32¢ to 33¢
each.
When the Post Office does
such things, irritated people usually ask
questions.
One small businessman
recently noted that "The Post Office calls itself a
business. If that's the case, does the Post Office pay
the city a business license permit like the rest of us
do?
Shirley Schwab, a staffer in
the city's finance department, said, "No. The Post Office
is a governmental agency and they have an
exemption."
So. The Post Office--called a
"business" by its public relations flacks, doesn't have
to pay for a business license like other
businesses?
Sunnyside Postmaster Karen
Durkee said the Post Office is quasi-governmental, so no
business license is required.
"The only part (of the U.S.
Post Office) that's not government is the fact it's no
longer subsidized (by the government) like it used to be.
All (operations) are paid for by (sale of) stamps and
services," Durkee said.
That means it doesn't pay
federal corporate taxes either, unlike UPS and other
private carriers.
