Police seize drugs, $20,000 in stolen tools during Mabton raid
MABTON (Friday 1-1-99)---Police this afternoon seized $2,000 in drugs and $15-20,000 in stolen tools after getting a warrant to search a home here. Three Mabton men and one from Portland were arrested in the bust.

Sunnyside Det. Sgt. Jim Rivard said the warrant was served after they received a tip about drugs being sold at 510 Fern St.

Police reportedly found three ounces of methamphetamines in the home with a street value of $1,500 to $2,000.

Officers also discovered a large quantity of tools stolen from a burglary of Johnson's Concentrate in Sunnyside. Included were tool chests, a steam cleaner, power tools, specialty tools and a gas welder valued at $15-20,000.

Investigations led to the arrest of Rick Siller, 28, of 510 Fern St. and Charles Payne, 30, of 2021 Green Valley Rd., both Mabton; and Gabriel Abalos, 20, of Portland OR.

Siller was charged with possession of methamphetamines with intent to deliver and first degree possession of stolen property. Payne was charged with possessing stolen property, and Abalos was charged with marijuana possession, police said.

The three are custody at Yakima County Jail, and due for arraignment Jan. 4.

Sunnyside man nabbed for rape

SUNNYSIDE (Friday 1-1-99)---A Sunnyside man was arrested at 2:45 p.m. today on charges of raping a 17-year old woman during a party at 206 E. Lincoln Ave., according to police.

Tomas Cerda, Jr., 18, of 917 E. Harrison Ave., was identified by the woman as the person who committed the rape, police said. They reportedly knew each other.

YVN presently does not release victims' names, unless charges prove to be false.

Police said they approached the house where Cerda was last seen. He reportedly was nabbed by police as he attempted to flee through the back yard.

Occupants of the house wouldn't let police process the crime scene and refused to answer the door, according to Det. Sgt. Jim Rivard. Police could see persons inside the house, so they got a search warrant and forced their way in.

They counted 14 persons inside the place. As they attempted to process the crime scene, serveral persons became disorderly and were arrested, Rivard said.

The victim of the rape was examined at Sunnyside Community Hospital and released. Cerda is in custody and will be arraigned in Superior Court Jan. 4.

Cerda was charged with 1st degree robbery last August after three thugs robbed the STM Market at 309 Yakima Valley Highway.
