- Deputies
earn medals for courage
- KENNEWICK (Thursday,
11-24-98)--Two Benton County Sheriff's deputies
have earned a place in history as the first to
receive top medals from the
department.

- Medals were presented
at the Benton County Justice Center this
afternoon.

- Deputy Tom Croskrey
was awarded the department's Medal of Honor for his
actions April 15 in an incident where he was forced
to shoot an armed suspect who was threatening his
and another deputy's life.

- Deputy Jeff
Quackenbush received the department's Life Saving
Medal for his actions July 12 when he evacuated a
home that was engulfed in flames.

- Both cases marked the
first occasion where the two top medals have been
awarded, according to Undersheriff Bill
Morey.
- Coroner's
stolen truck recovered
- FINLEY (Thursday,
11-12-98)--Somebody stole Franklin County Coroner
Dan Blasdel's truck Nov. 3, but Benton County
deputies recovered it yesterday near
here.

- Deputies were alerted
to a speeding truck in the area of Morton and Reik
Roads at a little past 1 a.m. Wednesday.

- They gave chase but
the truck sped away. After a short distance, the
truck slowed down and several persons jumped
out--then the truck ran off the
road.

- Deputies nabbed the
jumpers and they learned the truck had been stolen
from Blasdel Nov. 3. Seven juveniles were in the
truck. Investigators will see if they should be
charged with possession of stolen
property.

- Most of the juveniles
were released to their parents.

- The juvenile driver,
an unfortunately unnamed bird from Finley, was
charged with eluding and reckless endangerment,
driving with a suspended license, and second degree
theft, officers said. He was booked at Kennewick's
Juvenile Justice Center on those charges plus two
outstanding warrants for his
arrest.

- Blasdel got his truck
back, according to Undersheriff Bill
Morey.

- Faulty
heater blamed for fire
- KENNEWICK (Tuesday,
11-10-98)--A faulty heater was blamed for starting
a fire at 206622 E. Bryson Brown Rd. at 1:35 a.m.
Sunday.

- Deputies say Shirley
E. Chacone, who lives nearby, called emergency
personnel who doused the flames. Owners of the
house weren't immediately known.

- Fire damages
Prosser home
- PROSSER (Monday,
11-9-98)--A weekend fire has damaged a mobile home
belonging to Susan J. Perkins, 45, of 157902 W.
Kingtull Rd., deputies say.
Investigators said the
fire was reported at around 5 p.m. Sunday. The
trailer was heavily damaged by fire and smoke
before flames were extinguished.
Cause and origin of the
fire are still under investigation according to
Undersheriff Bill Morey.
Everett
hunter shot near Prosser
- PROSSER (Tuesday,
11-3-98)--An Everett man was accidentally shot near
Old Inland Empire Highway and McDonald Roads--Hogue
Farms-- at 10 a.m. Sunday.

- Deputies said Charles
D. Ross, Jr., 29, of 421 85th Place SW, #A103,
Everett, was hunting with a party of two other
adults and his 16-year old nephew when he caught a
load of birdshot in the left side of the face and
neck. Ross reportedly was standing about 25 yeards
from the shotgun when wounded.

- His 16-year-old nephew
was ahead of the main party when quail flew up
between them. He reportedly turn around and fired
one shot at a quail, then heard someone yell. The
shot struck his uncle.

- Ross was taken to
Prosser Memorial Hospital, then transferred to
Richland's Kadlec Hospital. He then was flown to
Harborview in Seattle for treatment of his
injuries.

- No criminal chargers
are anticipated against the 16-year old nephew,
according to Undersheriff Bill
Morey.
