Thugs set fire, steal car, flee
SELAH (Friday 10-30-98)--Two thugs reportedly set fire in a field, stole a car, and used a pair of scissors to threaten onlookers in an incident at 4:30 p.m. yesterday at Northwestern Fruit and Produce, 10331 N. Wenas Rd.

Deputies said one guy got into the stolen car while the other fled on foot. Officers said charges have been dropped against the runner.

Two civilian witnesses--who were tied in with police via radio-- followed the stolen car, made the collar, held the guy, and waited for police to arrive. They said the car stopped because it dropped its transmission.

YSO--with backup from the Washington State Patrol--then arrived to arrest the driver at I-82 and Yakima Avenue "without incident".

Taken into custody was a 17-year old Hispanic male in a 1986 Honda Accord. The Sheriff's Dept. wouldn't release his name and address. Other sources said the guy's name is Jose Muñoz--a.k.a. Jose Herrera, Juan Santana and Juan Torres.

Workers at Northwestern said "Muñoz" was among a group staying in Northwestern housing but drinking and not working. The firm cut them a check and told them to leave. The incident reportedly followed.

"This is a bad boy," the source said.

Lt. Ken Irwin told YVN the kid apparently "just wanted a car" and took it.
Muñoz was charged with arson and robbery and jailed, according to deputies.

Irwin indicated the Yakima County Sheriff's Dept. policy is not to release names and addresses of those they arrest, charge and imprison until the bad guy is arraigned--sometimes the next day unless a weekend intervenes--in this case in juvenile court.

The Honda was returned to its owner, a Northwestern employee. Selah Fire Dept. extinguished the five-acre blaze, which burned only stubble.

Suspected killer nabbed in Calif.
SUNNYSIDE (Monday 10-26-98)--With the help of California authorities, the Yakima County Sheriff now has in custody Jose V. Sifuentes (aka Jose V. Gonzalez), 33, a suspect in the seven-year old killing of Marcelino Castillo, 32.

Sifuentes was arrested Oct. 21 in Van Nuys, Calif., without incident, deputies said. A Sheriff's detective went down to bring him back.

Sifuentes was named as a suspect, along with Julio Gonzalez, 44, in Castillo's murder seven years ago.

Deputies believe the three men were outside a barn during a cock fight at 200 Den Boer Rd., near Sunnyside, at around 5 p.m. July 20, 1991, when the shooting occurred.

Shots reportedly were exchanged between the three men, with Castillo the only person hit. Castillo's body was then transported to a site near Mabton and dumped. Investigators later found the body.

Julio Gonzalez is still a fugitive from the incident and his whereabouts presently are unknown.

Mary Stewart, 24, was eastbound on Yakima Valley Highway, approaching Konnowack Pass Rd., when she lost control and went into the westbound lane.

The brown Ford Mustang then left the roadway on the north side and entered the ditch, where it rolled and eventually came to rest on its top along the north side of the roadway. During the roll the driver, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle.

At the completion of the roll, the '82 Mustang came to rest on top of Stewart. She was pronounced dead at the scene of massive head and internal injuries, according to deputies. The Mustang was totaled.
