Elderly man killed on YV Highway
SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday, 10-31-98)--An elderly Sunnyside man was struck by a car and killed as he walked across Yakima Valley Highway in the 1300 block at around 5 p.m. today.

Killed was Guadalupe Zepeda, 77. Police say he was struck by a car driven by Sergio Trujillo, 19, also of Sunnyside.

Zepeda was pronounced dead at the scene by Sunnyside Fire Dept. personnel.

Police said Trujillo was not traveling in a reckless manner nor at excess speed. Intoxicants reportedly were not involved.

Sunnyside PD is continuing to investigate the accident along with the Washington State Patrol.

Brothers jailed for criminal trespass
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 10-21-98)--When off-duty Officer Cory Rosen spotted a man hanging around a Sunnyside home last week, he was suspicious. Rosen knew him.

The guy reportedly had a history of burglary and drug arrests. Before Rosen could notify the police department, however, he lost sight of the suspect.

A few moments later, he was able to locate not one, but two suspects near the doors of 620 Riverside Ave. The men told them their car was broken down. They told him they were looking for help.

Rosen didn't believe them. So he called for help from an on-duty officer. Meanwhile, the suspects fled. As luck would have it, later that day Rosen, while still off-duty, spotted the suspects in their gold-colored, 1980 Buick Skylark.

The Sunnyside officer followed them several miles in an attempt to identify the pair, but lost them in the Nass Road area near Granger.

Yesterday, an on-duty Rosen spotted the two men yet again. This time, they were hanging around a residence at 2400 E. Edison Ave. Officer Rosen asked what they were doing. When their stories didn't make sense, he arrested them for further investigation.

After questioning, the suspects admitted they had been getting ready to burglarize the Edison Avenue home.

Booked on charges of criminal trespass yesterday were Felipe Resendez, 30, and Israel Resendez, 31, both of 521 S. 9th St., Sunnyside (click names for mug shots). According to county records, 521 S. 9th St. is owned by Augustin and Blanca Alanis.

Police nail alleged gang shooters
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 10-13-98)--Police have arrested two Sunnyside youths after they reportedly fired on another car with four persons inside it, officers said this morning.

Rival gangs came together in the 500 block of Fairview Ave. in North Sunnyside at about 6 p.m. yesterday. No injuries were reported.

Arrested on four counts of second degree assault after the incident was Jose Lopez, 17, of 1150 Alexander Ext., Grandview. Roman Garcia, 17, of 701 Woods Rd., Sunnyside, was arrested and charged as an accomplice to second degree assault.

Police said on-the-scene evidence and further investigation led to the recovery of a firearm from the home of one of the suspects. It was believed to be the firearm used in the assault.

"At this time the shooting appears to have been started by a rival gang conflict which led to the car chase and shooting in a residential area of the city", said Sunnyside Detective Kent Coffman.

Another person, Mario Sandoval, is wanted by Sunnyside police in connection with the incident.
