Man arrested for child rape SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 9-16-98)--Police have arrested a Sunnyside man on two counts of raping and two counts of molesting a seven-year old girl, according to police reports.Paul John Stanton, 23, of 1516 Irving Ave., was arrested at his home by Officer Ollie Hernandez at about 7 p.m. Sept. 11.
On Sept. 4, Sunnyside detectives said they received a report from the girl's parents that a man was molesting their daughter. The mother reportedly said her daughter "had been abused for the past two years." The girl reportedly has been in fear of the suspect.
Investigations and a search of the suspect's house for items described by the girl led police to arrest Stanton, according to reports.
EDITOR'S NOTE (2-10-99)--- Press reports indicate that Stanton was ACQUITTED on the rape charge in Yakima County Superior Court Feb. 10. "The court found the state did not establish proof beyond a reasonabale doubt", court officials told the Daily Sun News. Reports said the two-day bench trial ended Feb. 10 with an acquittal. Judge James Hutton presided over the trial. Kevin Eilmes was the prosecuting attorney. The trial earlier was scheduled for Nov. 9, but was held off until this week, according to press reports.
Man busted for dope in Safeway
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 9-16-98)--A Yakima man was arrested by Sunnyside police at the Safeway store at 10 p.m. last night and charged with intent to deliver 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana.
Taken into custody was Marc Kaschmitter, 19, of Yakima.
Det. Sgt. Jim Rivard said the arrest followed a three-week investigation. Kaschmitter's vehicle was also seized at the time of arrest, police said. He is set for arraignment today at Yakima County Superior Court.
Officer slightly injuredDriver slams into police car
SUNNYSIDE (Saturday, 9-5-98)--An Outlook man with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit reportedly slammed into the car of a Sunnyside patrolman in the 2200 block of Yakima Valley Highway early today.
Officer Cory Rosen was sitting in his patrol car writing out a ticket for another violator when the incident occurred at around 1 a.m. Neither he nor the Police Explorer with him were injured.
Officer John Chumley, however, who was standing near Rosen's car, was slightly injured on his arm when the force of the collision knocked Rosen's patrol car into him.
Police said the car that smashed into Rosen's was driven by Cruz Castillo, of Outlook. Both Castillo's car and the patrol car received extensive damage.
Sgt. Ed Radder said Castillo's car came to a stop a short distance from the collision scene, and Castillo was taken into custody. He was booked on charges of driving under the influence, and driving with suspended driver license privileges.
Police report witness intimidation
SUNNYSIDE (Friday, 9-3-98)--Sunnyside police have arrested a man they say attempted to intimidate a witness in a second degree assault case.
Det. Sgt. Jim Rivard said the victim was contacted by Ramiro Morfin, of 1334 S. County Line Rd., Grandview, who, he said, intimidated him by making comments and gestures that led him to believe Morfin was reaching for a weapon.
Police said they arrested Morfin--who reportedly was out on bail pending the second degree assault case--at his Grandview home at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3. He will be arraigned in Yakima County Superior court.
