- BENTON CITY
(Wednesday, 8-26-98)--Two Benton City youngsters
ages 11 and 12 broke into the Benton City Sewer
Plant Monday, but were caught by a plant
worker.
-
- Sheriff's deputies
responded when employee Mark R. Bandstra called
them.
-
- The kids reportedly
had been seen by a city employee near the open door
of the treatment plant. They fled when they knew
they were spotted, but the city worker brought them
back to the scene.
-
- Sheriff's deputies
said the youngsters apparently forced open a window
at the plant, located at the east end of Dinah
Road.
-
- The kids reportedly
broke glassware, discharged a fire extinguisher,
and spilled a small amount of hydrochloric acid
powder on the floor.
-
- As a result, hazardous
material (Hazmat) units responded to the scene.
They checked the two little perps and a deputy for
chemical exposure, but no injuries were reported.
Similarly, a patrol car was checked for damage, but
reportedly received none.
-
- Undersheriff Bill
Morey said the kids also spilled about 10 gallons
of waste oil into a Kiona Irrigation District
excavation site. No estimate of damages or cleanup
costs was reported.
-
- The juveniles were
charged with second-degree burglary and second
degree malicious mischief, then released to their
parents.
