15-year old girl possible kidnap victim
MABTON--(Monday, 7-27-98)--The Yakima County Sheriff is investigating a possible kidnapping of a 15-year old Mabton girl by an older acquaintance, deputies said today.

Missing is Blanca Selene Garcia, 5'4", 135 pounds. The suspect is Ricardo Miranda, in his 20s or 30s, at 6', 150 pounds.

Deputies said Miranda may be driving a beige 1986 Chrysler LeBaron four-door with license plate 218 HXM.

Deputies said Blanca's parents left for work at 4 a.m. Saturday. When they returned Blanca was missing. Her clothes, shoes and other personal belongings were still at the residence.

There apparently were no witnesses, no evidence of forced entry, no struggle nor injury, deputies said.

Deputies said Miranda is suspect because he lived at the Garcia's earlier, when another unreported incident of kidnapping, involving Blanca, took place. The family reportedly thought they had taken care of the problem when they had Miranda leave.

Neither Miranda nor his car was located at his new address in Grandview.

Deputies said it isn't known for certain that this is a kidnapping. Due to circumstances, however, the Sheriff's office at this time will investigate it as one. Those who may have information concerning the whereabouts of Blanca Garcia are urged to call the Sheriff's office at 1-800-574-0490.

Biker found dead
COWICHE (Saturday 7-18-98)---A Seattle bicyclist was reported missing and later found dead in the Cowiche Canyon area hours after her husband call Yakima County Sheriff's deputies Friday afternoon.
Found dead of apparent heat exhaustion was Dana Slater, who went mountain biking with her husband, Tom.

Deputies said the Slaters parked their truck on Scenic Drive about a half mile west of 80th Avenue, site of the trail head that leads into Cowiche Canyon from the top of the ridge.

The two bikers reportedly made their ride and were returning to their truck, climbing out of the canyon on a set of switch-back corners. Tom reportedly got ahead of his wife and waited at an intersection near the top of the ridge. She didn't come back. He went to find her but she was gone.

Sheriff's deputies began the search checking the most likely areas, soliciting help from local mountain bikers in the area. Search and rescue personnel were called and searched into the night, using ground teams and mountain bikers.

A U.S. Army MAST helicopter stationed at the Yakima training Center, with night-vision capabilities was used during the night. No clues were found. Searchers were sent home around 2:30 a.m. today. The search resumed at 6 a.m., using ground teams, horse teams, search dogs and a small fixed-wing aircraft.

Dana was found about 10 a.m. by the horse team bout 30 yeards from the main trail on top of the ridge. And autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. Indications are she may have suffered some type of heat exhaustion or stroke.
