Wild hill chase ends in arrest

SUNNYSIDE (Friday, 7-10-98)--A Sunnyside man led police on a hair-raising chase on the south face of Harrison Hill and down at about 10:30 last night. Officers eventually caught the driver and booked him into the slammer.

Police said the incident began when they responded to an accident report. A vehicle had failed to stop after striking another car at East Riverside and Sunnyside Avenues.

Watch Commander Jim Orth said officers spotted a suspect car on East Riverside Avenue, and gave chase. The fleeing vehicle failed to negotiate a turn at East Lincoln and South Fourth and drove over the railroad tracks and into a nearby drainage ditch.

Officers said the driver tried to throw beer cans out of the car window to destroy evidence. The driver was taken into custody without incident and found to be legally intoxicated.

Arrested for felony eluding, driving under the influence, for hit-and-run, and second degree driving with a suspended license was Felipe Cortez Arriaga, 18, of 1302 S. 9th St., Sunnyside.

No injuries were reported by victims whose vehicle was hit by Arriaga's car.

Officers involved in the incident want to convey their thanks to the "numerous citizens who stopped to help". They wanted to make sure officers were OK during and after the incident, police said.

Unnattended baby in DSHS custody

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday, 7-8-98)--Police were forced to break into a home at 612 Ravine Avenue at 8 p.m. July 6 to rescue an 11-day-old infant whose mother had left it alone in the house.

Police were alerted when a neighbor complained about a baby crying inside a locked home. When Sgt. Bob Charvet arrived at the home, he made certain no adults were inside. Then he climbed into a partially opened window to rescue the child. He said it was "quite warm" inside. He found the crying baby in her crib in the master bedroom. The infant's umbilical cord was still attached.

"The baby had its diaper most of the way off and needed changing due to a bowel movement. I noticed a bottle with formula about a foot and a half away from the baby's head. I changed the diaper and then transported the baby to the (Sunnyside Community) hospital for a checkup," Charvet reported.

Police said the mother, Thuraia Ahmad Barakat, returned home later with her older son. She identified her baby--born June 26--as Shams Ahmad Nasser. Hospital records indicated the child's name was Nadir Shams Nassar.

Barakat said she had taken her older son to the store to buy him some shoes. She reportedly said she left the baby in the house because she didn't have an infant seat for her car. Police told her Shams was in the hospital.

When police came back to the hospital, Anna Gaines, DSHS Child Protective Service agent, was holding the child. Charvet told Gaines police records revealed that, on May 28, officers Jim Ortiz and Bill Eikenbary found several Barakat children unnattended in a car, while the mother went into Save-on-Foods with her 12-year-old.

Charvet told Barakat that Shams had been turned over to CPS' Anna Gaines. A checkup by doctors showed Shams to be in good health. Police requested that charges be filed against Thuraia Barakat.

SUNNYSIDE (Friday, 7-24-98)--Jose Bravo Hernandez, 36, of 302 N. 13th St., Sunnyside, was arrested at 522 Cemetery Rd.by officer John Chumley at 10 p.m. July 23 and held for immigration authorities.

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Jose Garcia Estrada, 29, of 1108 1/2 Decatur Ave., was arrested at his home by officer Jeff Cunningham at 11:30 p.m. July 3 and booked on charges of fourth degree assault and third degree malicious mischief.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Robert Allen Farley, 35, of Rt. 3, Box 79430 S. Edwards Rd., Stanfield, OR, was arrested at the Grant Avenue Dairy Queen at 8:30 p.m. July 3 and booked on charges of disorderly conduct.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Pedro Garcia, 19, of 300 W. Third St. #5, Granger, was arrested by the WSP on I-82 and charged with driving with no valid operator's license at 1:02 p.m. July 4.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Melissa Loredo Hernandez, 21, of 1108 E. Decatur Ave., was arrested by officer Jeff Cunningham at 11:30 p.m. July 3 and booked on three warrants for her arrest. Police were alerted to her location while investigating a family fight, reports indicated.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- J. Mario Ramirez Mendez, 29, of 309 Weatherwax St., was arrested near I-82 by officer Jarin Whitby at 2:19 a.m. July 5 and booked on charges of driving with a suspended license, driving while intoxicated, obstructing a law enforcement officer and for two warrants for his arrest.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Alejandro De Jesus Mora, 18, of 605 Bonnieview, Grandview, was arrested at 188 Morgan St. by Yakima Sheriff's Deputy J. Christman at 9:45 p.m. July 4 and booked on charges of possessing a stolen firearm and for reckless endangerment.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Julio R. Padilla, 28, of 1901 Queen St., Grandview, was arrested by officer Jarin Whitby at Marquez Trailer Park at 9:10 p.m. July 3 and booked on charges of driving with a suspended license and a warrant for his arrest.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Joel Hernandez Porras, 35, of 1402 Mabton-Sunnyside Hwy, was arrested at 16th and Irving at 2 a.m. July 5 by officer L. Messmore and booked on charges of driving while intoxicated.

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Joel Almaguer, of 306 Main St., Outlook, was arrested at 6th and Blaine Sts. by officer John Chumley at 12:30 p.m. July 2 and booked on charges of driving with a suspended license.

SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 7-8-98)-- Several women, mostly middle-age, were arrested in Yakima around 1:30 p.m. July 2 and transferred by Yakima Police to Sunnyside Jail for infractions in Yakima.

The Sunnyside jail routinely hosts non-Sunnyside prisoners.

 

PD reports later indicated that Burch, Effenhofer, Miller and Olson were charged in Yakima for prostitution. Reports indicated they were conducting their businesses independently. Arroyo was arrested for "failure to control (physical control)", and Belcourt for a DUI.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Saturday, 7-4-98)--Ethel Bernice Glaze, 1113 Cherry Ave., Yakima, was arrested by John Chumley at the Sunnyside Wal Mart store at 3:09 p.m. July 2 and booked into Sunnyside jail on two warrants for her arrest. She was charged on two counts of shoplifting in Yakima and one in Union Gap.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Saturday, 7-4-98)--Brent W. Cole, 26, of 190 Oldenway Rd., Toppenish, was arrested in Sunnyside Central Park by officer Phil Schenck at 7:45 p.m. July 2 and booked on charges of disorderly conduct and threats to do harm.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Saturday, 7-4-98)--Kimberly L. Cromwell, 30, of 300 S. 5th St., was arrested on a warrant by officer John Chumley at 4:20 p.m. July 2 at 400 S. 5th St. and booked into Sunnyside jail.

 

SUNNYSIDE (Saturday, 7-4-98)--Eliseo Mesa Solis, 27, of 1303 15th Ave., Yakima was transferred from Yakima County Jail to Sunnyside jail at 4:19 p.m. July 2.
