School board to take on new member, discuss $33 million

SUNNYSIDE (Monday 7-27-98)---Sunnyside Schools will take on a new school board member, hire 16 new staffers, and let go of another five, say officials.

The board will also discuss its $33-million 1998-99 budget, and discuss approval of federal and state grant proposals written by local staff.

It all happens during the regular directors meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Lincoln School.

Lorenzo Garza, long time employee of Migrant Education programs, will take the oath of office. Garza was appointed to replace Trevert Shelley, who earlier resigned to move to Spokane. Garza will stand for election to the board himself when the position comes before voters again.

The school board chose Garza over Bruce Riggs, who also applied to the board for the position when it came up for grabs.

The board also is expected to approve the retirements or resignations of Andrea Manion, Washington Elementary teacher; Annie McKay, SHS special ed teacher; Kathy Trina, special ed teacher; and Maggie Pina, secretary at Pioneer Elementary.

An array of 15 new staffers will greet the district's 4,870 children when the '98-'99 school year starts Aug. 26.

  • Adelia Goedhart, asst. principal, Sunnyside High School
  • Dalia Gonzalez, Spanish teacher, SHS
  • Veronica Barajas, secretary, Pioneer Elementary
  • Mary Myers, 4.5-hour cook, districtwide
  • Brian Hart, P.E./social studies, SHS
  • Cheryl Pira, transfer, gifted and talented, Washington Elementary
  • Tina Vasquez, para-educator, summer program '97-'98
  • Sophia Moore, secretary, Chief Kamiakin elementary
  • Maria Whitby, math teacher, Harrison Middle School
  • Dan Thomas, yearbook/newspaper advisor, SHS
  • Charles Cook, bloc teacher, Harrison Middle School
  • Jennifer Golden, block teacher, Harrison Middle School
  • Tom Robinson, marketing teacher, SHS
  • Maxine Means, 2.5-hr. cook, districtwide.
The board will also conduct a public hearing on its $33,100,265 budget, which will be presented during the meeting. Testimony both for and against the budget will he heard, officials said.

  • Approve a board meeting schedule for the upcoming year
  • Discuss the D.A.R.E. agreement
  • The interdistrict handicapped-student cooperative
  • Permission to call for bids on portable classrooms
  • Budget resolution #20-98
  • Adoption of a math curriculum
  • Sale of surplus property
  • The board will discuss whether to approve grant applications to state and federal government agencies as produced by local staff: Grant applications will include:
  • Title II Part C Migrant Education
  • Highly capable students
  • Title VI Innovative Education Program
  • State transitional bilingual program
  • Learning assistance program
  • Title II Eisenhower Professional Development program
  • Title VII bilingual education
  • Comprehensive school grant
  • Readiness to learn
  • State omnibus
  • Federal drug free schools

  • Other grants as they become available.
