- Sunnyside to mull Fiestas Patrias parade Sept. 13-14
- SUNNYSIDE (7-20-98 )--The city council will discuss celebrating Mexico's Independence Day Sept. 13-14 in tonight's city council meeting.
The issue might turn hotter than a firecracker. Some council members and city staff don't cotton to the idea of celebrating the independence day of another country in the U.S. of A.
City staff recommend denial of a request by David Silva, director of One-Stop Immigration, to let the celebration take place, at least the Sunday parade.
So far as is known, the American Fourth of July isn't celebrated anywhere in Michoacan--even for one day--but reason has no real place in American politics. And most everyone loves a good pachanga.
Merilee Robinson earlier reminded the Council the city already celebrates El Cinco de Mayo, another Mexican holiday, which receives the support of the Uptown Sunnyside Assn. (USA). But she said the Fiestas Patrias parade on Sept. 14 would take place less than a week before Sunshine Days Sept. 18-20.
Robinson, who heads up the Sunshine Days committee, indicated a parade less than a week prior to Sunshine Days would detract from well established festivities.
In other business tonight, the council will discuss:
- The city's six-year street plan. Is your home or business on a street that's in the plan?
- Paying bills totaling $329,176.56
- Tom Biehl's petition for annexing his property
- Amending R-1 Zone requirements
- Vacating a street occupied by Bob Hall Insurance
- Amending the uniform fire code.
- Setting a noon workshop meeting place
- City manager selection process
- Workshop agenda items for July 27
- Amending the muni code for parking downtown
- Unscheduled appearances by Sunnysiders
- Issues brought up by council members
