Two arrested after shots fired
SUNNYSIDE (Sunday 6-14-98)--Two Mexican aliens have been arrested after police responded to reports of shots fired at S. 13th St. and Lincoln Avenue, police reported.

Arrested were Leonel M. Lopez, 27, of 382 Willowcrest Rd., and Jose Lucas Morfin, 31, 1221 E. Edison Ave., both Mexican aliens.

Detective Sgt. Jim Rivard said officers spotted a suspect vehicle a short time after reports came in about gunfire at 13th and Lincoln. They found Lopez with a .45 automatic pistol. He was arrested for being an alien in possession of a firearm.

Police said Morfin was arrested a short time later as a second person involved in the gun firing incident. He was arrested on eight counts of reckless endangerment and as an alien in possession of a firearm.

A search warrant was prepared for Morfin's home. Police found several weapons including a 9 mm pistol, a .22 pistol and an AK-47 rifle.

Arraignment for illegal firearm possession will take place in Yakima County Superior Court. Reckless endangerment charges will be arraigned in Sunnyside municipal Court. Both men are being held in Sunnyside.

3 arrested for shooting into home
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 6-10-98)--Three locals have been arrested in connection with shooting into a private home here, according to police.

Arrested Monday on five counts of first degree assault were:
Joshua Rodriguez, 13, of 321 N. 10th St.
Guillermo V. Chavez, 13, of 613 S. 13th St.
Arrested for failure to report a violent felony was:
Richard D. Ortiz, 18, #31 Parkland Homes
Sunnyside police detective Kent Coffman said officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of S. 11th St. at about 11:20 Sunday night.

Witnesses said three shots had been fired. Two of the slugs reportedly struck a private residence. Of these, one penetrated an outer wall and entered the bedroom of a 10-year old girl asleep in her bed. The entire family was home during the shooting. Police located no suspects at that time.

Officers reported the home hit by slugs has not been a "problem home" or affiliated with prior gang incidents. It reportedly wasn't a "drive-by"; shooters were on foot.

At 8 a.m. Monday, police received a report about two juveniles who may have had a gun the day of the shooting. Police said contact with Rodriguez and Chavez at their homes led to their arrests.

Coffman reported the weapon used in the assault was recovered in Ortiz' home, but that he was not present at the shooting. Ortiz was charged with failure to report a violent felony and booked in the Sunnyside Law & Justice Center.

Rodriguez and Chavez were booked on five counts each of first degree assault, then transported to the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center. Their photos weren't available, but will be published if we get them.

SUNNYSIDE (Friday 6-05-98)--Sunnyside police have arrested Valdemar Morales, 39, of 621 Fairview Ave., on an Arizona warrant and for marijuana possession, according to Sunnyside detective Kent Coffman.

Police, along with federal drug enforcement officials, executed the warrant at Morales' residence at 5 p.m. Thursday. During that time, Morales was located driving his car near his home. Police reportedly found more than 40 grams of packaged marijuana in the car he was driving.

Morales originally was arrested on a $250,000 warrant out of Pia County, Arizona. The warrant is for narcotics possession violations, police said. Seized during the search of Morales' home was a firearm, ammunition, and several hundred dollars in U.S. currency. Morales was booked and sent to Yakima County jail, Coffman said.

Man threatens, bops 2 with shotgun butt
SUNNYSIDE (Wednesday 6-03-98)--Sheriff's deputies arrested a man here for threatening two others with a sawed off shotgun early today, according to officers.

Deputies said three men were talking outside a house in the 300 block of Willowcrest when two of them--one in a wheelchair--asked the resident for a ride home. He refused to give them a ride, and an argument reportedly ensued a little after midnight.

Deputies indicated the resident went inside the house, brought out the shotgun, and and bopped both men in the face with the stock.

Officers alleged he put the gun to the two men's heads and threatened to kill them.

The two guests reportedly fled and contacted the Sheriff's office. Deputies said the two don't have serious injuries.

Deputies said a white male, 47, was arrested later in the morning for first degree assault, for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and for possessing a sawed off shotgun. They said the shotgun and other evidence was recovered.

Officials at the Sunnyside Law & Justice Center said William McDaniel, 391 Willowcrest Rd., was booked in connection with the incident. The investigation is continuing.
