Yakima County Sheriff MAY 1998

Animal fights illegal
YAKIMA COUNTY (Saturday, May 23, 1998) Controlled and organized fighting of animals, such as dogs and roosters, and wagering bets on the outcome, is against Washington State law, say sheriff's deputies.

"These activities are contrary to the humane treatment of animals. And it's against state law regarding animals, gaming and gambling. The Yakima County Sheriff's Office enforces these laws vigorously," said a departmental spokesman.
Those who have information on the location, date and time of an upcoming animal-fight event are urged to report it to the YCSO at 1-800-572-0490 or 574-2500.

Peace officer memorial set
YAKIMA (Wednesday, 5-13-98)--No Yakima County Sheriff's deputy has ever lost his life in the line of duty, at least in departmental memory.
But memorials will be made May 15 to those 14,000 peace officers who have been killed on duty since U.S. Marshal Robert Forsyth was killed Jan. 11, 1794.

Today, every 57 hours, an on-duty peace officer is killed and 189 are seriously assaulted in the U.S.

The Yakima County Sheriff's office will conduct a ceremony observing Peace Officer's Memorial Day at 8:30 a.m. May 15 in front of the Yakima County Courthouse at North First and B Street. Citizens of Yakima County are invited to join in.

The Yakima County Sheriff's Honor Guard will conduct a flag presentation for the ceremony. Included will be Sergeants John Durand, Terry Murray, and Brian Winter, plus deputies Dave Hilton, Mike Russell, and Scott Swallow. Laura Woodall, 17, a West Valley High school junior, will play trumpet. Deputy Jim Cooper will offer a prayer.

Congress has designated the week of May 15 as National Peace Officer's Week, and May 15 of each year as Peace Officer's Memorial Day. County Commissioners have followed suit. Flags on government buildings will fly at half mast May 15.
