- City eyes fairness in Snipes variance
- SUNNYSIDE (Tuesday 5-12-98 )--The city council last night approved a noise variance requested by Snipes Mountain Brewery.
- Snipes asked if they could be allowed to make a little more noise than usual on May 16, 29,and 30.
- The council said okay, but it didn't give party goers free rein to make as much noise as they wanted on those dates. After all, the city recently came down on the Dark Horse Inn for making too much noise.
- Councilman Roy Anciso was on the case instanter. "My only concern is that one of the days will include a band playing on an outside patio. It is on Ninth Street, and there are residences nearby. We've been asking the Dark Horse to be to be quiet. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, too...I have a real problem with it--we want to make sure there is no
- favoritism," he said.
- Councilman Mike Farmer agreed. "We were very forceful with the Dark Horse. It would be sending the wrong message if we're not the same with other businesses," he said.
- Interim City Mgr. Mike Kunkler told the council the code for noise variance includes a safety valve. If there are complaints from residents to the police, the PD will tell the offending party to be more quiet. If that isn't done, the city can shut it down.
- "In the past, the police have actually worked with those requesting a variance," he said.
- Police Chief Wallace Anderson noted that a variance grant requires the requester to contact the PD. "We give them a copy of the ordinance," he said.
- In other business at last night's workshop meeting, the council discussed agenda items for their upcoming Meeting at 7 p.m. May 18 at Sunnyside's Law & Justice Center. Items included:
- The status of the Dark Horse Inn. The business was supposed to have completed its process of becoming quieter and less a nuisance to nearby residents. At risk is approval by the city of the Dark Horse's liquor license next time around.
- The future of Police Chief's vehicle allowance.
- The city's new anti-nepotism policy
- The Aqua Drilling bid issue.
- An ordinance creating a Small Works Roster. This would be a list of small contractors the city can draw on to do jobs that cost at least $7,500 but less than $15,000. The small contractors would be "known quantities" who had successfully completed work for the city before.
- Discuss the existing city contract allowing Sunnyside's swim team to use the Community Pool in Central Park.
- Discuss with Planning Director Richard Hendricksen the true division of duties between the Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment.
- Roy Anciso requested the city's contract with the City Library--signed in 1986--be examined and updated if needed.
- The council went into executive session to discuss a "collective bargaining issue."
