Sunnyside council okays WAME
SUNNYSIDE (4-28-98 )--The Sunnyside City Council has paved the way for the Washington Assn. of Minority Entrepreneurs (WAME) to operate a federally funded loan program in Sunnyside.

The council earlier held back certifying WAME because it wanted to check into the group's books. Council certifictaion came after careful scrutiny by city staff.

The go-ahead amounts to approving Title VI certification for the group's 1997 and1998 grants.

In certifying WAME, the city assures Sunnyside residents that WAME will follow Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, despite the word "Minority" in its name.

That Act states that "No person in the (U.S.) shall, on grounds of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

WAME, headed by Luz Gutierrez, makes loans to those starting or expanding small businesses in Yakima County. With the city's blessings, the program will now continue another year.

The program loans money at interest. As businesses pay it back, dollars are rolled over for yet more loans to yet more persons meeting the low-to-moderate-income eligibility criteria.

WAME staff say the loans are for persons of all genders and ethnic groups who are of low or moderate income.

Loans from the group so far total $264, 254, with $165,000 for Sunnyside alone.
