Sunnyside City Council deserves an "Atta Boy!"
SUNNYSIDE (April, 98)---Before the "new" council came to town, city meetings were called at 6 a.m.
And if you could manage to get down to the meetin' hall in the black of early morning, you would be treated to a 10-minute rubber-stamp session in which motions were approved or disapproved with a few grunts and sidelong glances.
Even the metro daily press would do phone followups after an "old" city council get-together.

"What's the use of covering a meeting in person when everything's been hashed out in advance?" one reporter asked another.
It's not like that in Sunnyside anymore.
The printed press is always there. And if the TV boys and girls find something sexy, they'll also pop up in their little white cars with the big black cameras.
Council meetings are held at a civilized 7 p.m. And most importantly, the nuts and bolts of decision making are hammered out in public. It isn't always pretty, but it's the way we've traditionally done things in this country.

I like it.

When people come in to meetings and rail at the "new" council for this or that, they should remember it was the "new" council that made it possible for them to vent their spleens. There's no way the bunch of them would have been there at 6 a.m. And if they had been, they wouldn't have known what to talk about.

And for all the closet socialists in this town who favor a government sporting a phony smile on its overfed face while it cuts out our collective gizzard, the Sunnyside Council as it exists today should be "required remedial study".

This council isn't controlled by any bureaucracy. This council is controlled by you, and it will listen to you. And it will deliberate in public.
Sunnyside is a hell of a lot better off than it was, even given the fact that it's obviously had some excellent and loyal staff on board for years.
And it's a heck of a lot better off than some other towns around here, large or small.
To the "new" council, we say, "Atta boy!" --LA
