- Community Center plan grant okayed
- SUNNYSIDE (3-9-98)--Three Sunnysiders spoke to the city council Monday night in favor of writing a $25,000 state planning grant to study the need for a new commuity center.
Greg Uberaga, Max Castillo, and Dave Fonfara convinced the council to request the state bucks. All councilmen, that is, except Don Vlieger, who left the room to abstain from the discussion and the vote.
Uberaga said a community center would be used to act as a focal point for recreation, education, and social programming, to improve the quality of life in the city.
"I'm requesting the city council approve making application for a plan for a community center in Sunnyside," Uberaga said.
Max Castillo said he'd like to see a multi-service facility which could be used to train parents to raise their children properly. He said it could also be used by Sunnyside's elderly.
"We need a place people don't have to pay for. It could be run on a volunteer basis to be cost effective," Castillo said.
Dave Fonfara, of Sunnyside, Inc., said he has discussed the community center with advocates, and has observed the success of the Night Options program.
"There is a need for a community center. But it's a large project only possible with a business plan and feasibility study, and determination of who's going to operate it.
"I suggest the council approve the feasibility study plan," said Fonfara.
